The Week in Training: SLO Marathon and Yoga Challenges

SLO Marathon Training Recap, Week 8

For what may be the first time during this current training cycle, I am actually happy with my training. I know! I’ve been pretty negative about it all, with illness and work hours interfering with my plans. This week, they (illness & work) tried to interfere, but I overcame them! Win!

On Wednesday, which is supposed to be my second speed work day of the week I woke up with a migraine. It was bad enough that I couldn’t run, but I also had to cancel five clients! I hate doing that, but it couldn’t be helped. I stayed in bed all morning, then finally fell into a good, solid sleep and woke up around 1:30 with the headache gone. One of my shorter ones, thank goodness.

I decided to get out on Thursday morning with Alan and our neighbor Christina, to see if I could get in some type of tempo run. It would have to be short because I have to be at work by 7:30, but that always encourages me to run faster. Christina decided to run along with me, and we ran three pretty fast miles. No real warm up, though the first mile was the slowest. I was just happy to get it done.

Christina and I also ran together on Friday, four easy miles, and Saturday, for part of my long run. It’s nice to have a new training partner. She’s a very nice girl, a new runner, and about 25 years younger than me so I’m getting my ass kicked on a regular basis a good push.

Alan announced the Desert Triathlon this weekend. It is held on both days, with the sprint and duathlon on Saturday and the international on Sunday. They had quite a treat this year. Saturday brought wind, with gusts up to about 50 mph, and on Sunday it rained all day. At least the wind died.

When I headed out for my long run with Christina on Saturday, the winds weren’t too bad yet. She ran with me for the first five miles, then I was on my own. I was scheduled for 16 miles, and it just seemed so long to run my regular out and back route, all by myself, especially when the winds started to rise up. After much deliberation (and a lot of running route math going on in my head), I decided to add on mileage as I headed away from home, then finish up at Lake Cahuilla, which is where the triathlon (and Alan) was (were?).

Running math is kind of funny, especially when you start to get tired (which I was from mile 10 on). I know the distances, I’d figure out where I needed to turn because I had to add on six miles, but my brain had a hard time holding onto it. I’d figure it out once at one total mileage, then it would be different the next time. Well, at least it gave my brain something to think about as I plodded along. It all worked out perfectly in the end. I finished up about 25 feet from where Alan was at the finish line.

Long Run

I was glad I was just running 16 miles (if you can believe that). The triathletes had to deal with a horrendous headwind as they headed back toward the park, not to mention the buoys in the water were blown way off course, so many swimmers got a little extra distance in. We all had sand in our hair and gritty teeth at the end though.

After I finished, I snagged some of Alan’s Gatorade, stretched, bundled up in one of his sweatshirts, and hung out until he was done. I even managed a couple yoga poses (see below)! One of the vendors brought me a smoothie, so I even got some refuel. Oh! And celebrities!

Two Hollywood stars competed in the sprint triathlon. Sadly, I am so out of touch that I have no idea who they were. There were good looking though. Even sadder, I was tired, stinky, and looked like I had just run 16 miles.

Sunday is usually an easy, run with the dogs day, but since I ran Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and plan to run Monday, I took a well deserved day off of running.

This is week eight of my SLO Marathon training. I’m still a little short of my total weekly distance goals, but I feel happy with my training this week. I’m running the Run Through Redlands half marathon next Sunday (and have to work at 6:45 on Saturday), so this coming week will be a bit of a cutback week. I do plan to run the race at my goal marathon pace, so that will be interesting.

Here’s the recap:

Monday: Intervals: 8 x .25 miles intervals at about 5k pace. Yoga warm up
Tuesday: Pilates Reformer workout, 20 minutes Balancing Flow from Yoga Download
Wednesday: Migraine. I did manage a little restorative yoga in the early evening.
Thursday: Tempo run. Three miles at lactate threshold pace. 30 minutes Pilates Reformer workout, 10 minutes Sun Salutations.
Friday: Four miles easy. A little yoga stretching after the run.
Saturday: Long run. 16 miles. Not much yoga, but I did manage to put my legs up the wall, er, up the tree.
Sunday: 90 minute Vinyasa class.

We are approaching the last few days of the Take the Leap 30 days of yoga challenge with prAna and Fit Approach. I have loved this so much! I’m sorry that it is almost over, but I plan to keep up my yoga practice. Here is the last week of posing.

Day 28. I finally made it to the yoga studio. A 90 minute Vinyasa class topped off with about 20 minutes of Yin. Recreating the poses that I held for 3 minutes each in class: Lizard, Pigeon, Seated Forward Fold. My favorite was Joyful Camel. Because I loved the name.

I made some of my favorite recipes this week, including Pot Pie (though I used Beyond Meat chicken instead of tofu) and Pizza. Both were delicious.

A Little Recap, A Little Marathon Planning, A Little Yoga

A Little Recap

This past week I was scheduled to run 35 miles, with my long run at 15.

That didn’t happen. After being sick for almost two weeks, worried that a day of sneezing and runny nose meant I was getting sick again, I managed a nine mile long run within a 20 mile week.

And I was pretty happy about it.

Run

While I started feeling better by Monday, I still had a cough, so I started the week slowly, with just an easy three mile run. That went well, so on Wednesday I upped the effort level a little, running five miles with seven fartlek bursts. I didn’t time or measure the bursts, but I’d guess they were somewhere around a quarter mile each. That felt good too, but then on Friday morning, which was a rainy day here in the desert, I woke up sneezing (and that awful feeling that you need to sneeze but just can’t get it out). I also had a runny nose, but other than that I felt fine. I don’t have allergies, but I was actually hopeful that I had developed some just so I wouldn’t worry about getting sick again.

Run 2

By Saturday, though, I felt fine, so I ran nine miles. The first five were with Alan and our neighbor, then I took off on my own to add an extra four. I did have a little bit of asthma about mile six, but I had my inhaler and used it. I had cut off options if I needed them, but after that one incident everything seemed to settle down. I finished the final miles with no problem.

A Little Marathon Planning

So here is my revised, revised training plan (Training plan 3.0) for the SLO Marathon. I’m hoping that I’ll stay healthy, and that the weird little twinge I have in my left foot is nothing. Now that is a strange one. I was getting into the shower, rotated my ankle as I turned, and I felt a little pulling, pinching sensation in my ankle/foot. It doesn’t really hurt, but there is something there that I want to pay attention to.

A Little Yoga

Well, I’ve made it through two days of the Take the Leap 30 Days of Yoga Challenge with Prana and Sweat Pink! On Monday I followed my own advice and did about 10 minutes of Sun Salutations to warm up before my run. As always, I had a little help.

Day 1

On Tuesday I decided to hit up the 6:00 am Yin Yoga class at Yoga Central. It was my first time to this class and I had no idea what to expect. The description said that the entire 45 minute class consists of passive poses held for two to five minutes. I knew when we started off with a two minute forearm plank that I was in for an experience. My biggest challenge was the wide leg squat which was held for three minutes (I think. It felt like five). My legs were shaking, but I’m pretty stubborn, so I held out. I really loved this class, which kind of surprised me because I love the flowing Vinyasa classes that I usually attend. A good lesson to try out something new!

My point, which I’ve taken a long time here to make is, that even when I first started working out, dressing the part inspired me to exercise.

Blogfest: It Starts with the People

It’s Saturday night and I have a date..with my computer. My husband is home patiently taking care of the (pet) family, I am exhausted after three days of exercise classes, sessions, parties (yes, we had those), and just the general feeling of go, go, go that happens during a fitness conference. And a blogging conference too, now that I have experienced one of those.

It’s hard to decide where to begin! Between the Blogfest conference, which was loaded with informative blogging information, then IDEAWorld, which of course is the ultimate of fitness conventions, I have had so much fun, learning, and social experiences that it’s really hard to choose where to start.

I think, because I left off last week with who I wanted to meet at the conference, I will start with the people that I did meet. Honestly, this was the best part of the whole experience for me!  Plus, since this was a blogging conference there will be tons of recap posts to choose from, so this one will be more personal to my experience.

First of all, from my list of Six Women (and One Man):

Carla! Yay! I finally  got to meet Carla, if only briefly, at our Team Eleven by Venus meet up at the Expo. My first thought (aside from “wow, that’s a beautiful outfit she’s wearing!”) was, “wow, she’s so little!” As an aside, I noticed a lot of the bloggers that I met for the first time were tiny. Not sure why that is, but all 5’8″ of me seemed to tower above most of them.

Anyway, Carla. She’s beautiful, fun, and I’m just sorry we didn’t have time to spend chatting. I know we’ll have a second chance at it and I can’t wait.

Kelly. Another brief, how do you do kind of meeting. Kelly was a presenter at Blogfest, so when she was finished with her presentation I dashed up, introduced myself, and managed to get a selfie with her. My eyes look a little crazy in this picture, but, since it’s the only one, I guess I have to post it.

Katie. Since she is also a member of Team Eleven, I had a little more time with Katy, but she was busy because she presented two sessions at Blogfest, so we didn’t have much chance to chat. Still, I was happy to have a chance to meet her.

Rita. I almost missed getting a chance to talk to Rita! She also presented, but when she was done, I had to dash off for another meeting, so I didn’t get to meet her. Fortunately, she was at the opening party later in the evening and we had the chance to chat.

Pavement Runner. As the only man on my “want to meet” list, Pavement Runner occupied a special place. I’m happy to say that I did get to meet him, spend a little time both at Blogfest, and at a group dinner on Friday evening. Still haven’t had a chance to run with him though.

There were only two women on my list that I didn’t get to meet. Jody did not make it to the event. She lives fairly close, though, in Southern California, so I know we’ll have a chance someday. And sadly, I never caught up with Gigi, who was at the expo while I was there! I tried for over a half hour, but then I had to go to a session, so we never did hook up. But, she too lives in So. Cal, so hopefully someday…

Now for the women that I wanted to meet again.

I had met a few fabulous women bloggers already, both at the 2013 IDEA World Conference, Ragnar, and other events that I wanted to meet again. And I did!

Pamela. We really hit it off. She was my partner at our boot camp class, and since we both had the same attitude about boot camp, we spent more time taking pictures of each other than actually working out (that’s an exaggeration. Pamela worked hard. I’m the lazy bones).

I also got to meet Jill, who runs really long distances, writes beautifully, is really tiny, and is not a 20-something, which is somewhat unusual for a blogger.

Friends 4Jillian Michaels was the keynote speaker. More on this later, but I’ll tell you that prior to seeing her speak, I was not a fan. My opinion has undergone a 180 degree change. She was pretty amazing (and she didn’t yell at us!).

Friends 17I also got to see a friend, Coach Jason, who I met years ago at IHRSA and haven’t seen for a while. He taught a session on running drills (which was very helpful). Coach Jason is actually Jason Karp, PhD., who was the Idea Personal Trainer of the Year a few years ago, and a really knowledgeable and interesting speaker.

Friends 27Blogfest was great. The sessions were informative and fun, the classes were challenging, and Jillian was amazing, but I still have to say that the best part of the whole experience was meeting so many of the people that I’ve been reading and communicating with for so long. Thanks to IDEA for adding Blogfest to the program and for inviting me to participate. I’m already looking forward to next year.

In the coming days I’ll be reporting on more of the events that took place during IDEA World and Blogfest and sharing some of the inspiring lessons that I learned.

8 Summer Running Tips

It is heating up in the desert. Which makes sense, considering that summer has officially started. As I write this it is 113 outside. All this makes running a tougher sport than it already is.

Summer Running Tips

Running in the summer can be challenging, but here are a few tips that can help.

  • Run early or late. Running in the cooler part of the day is smart. The morning hours are usually the coolest, but if that doesn’t work for you, waiting until early evening will provide some relief.
  • Drink before, during, and after your run to stay hydrated. Keep the water flowing! Using a sports drink can help balance your electrolytes to help avoid dehydration.
  • Adapt. Allow yourself 10 days to two weeks to acclimatize to hot weather, gradually increasing your distance and intensity.
  • Wear appropriate clothing. While running shirtless may sound cooler, in reality the direct sunlight can overheat you even more, not to mention cause you to risk a sunburn. Choose a moisture wicking material that is lightweight and comfortable. Lighter colors will keep you cooler. Protect your face by wearing a lightweight hat or visor.
  • Adjust your expectations. Running in the heat will take a toll on your training target times. Expect that, but know that as long as the effort is there you are still improving your fitness and your speed.
  • Listen to your Body. There are dangers associated with running in the heat, from dehydration, to heat exhaustion, to heat stroke. Learn the symptoms and pay attention to how you feel during your run.
  • Be Smart. On some hot, high humidity days, the smartest runners will move their run indoors or just take a rest day. Watch the heat index, which will let you know the “feels like” temperature, as well as the air quality index, particularly if you have asthma or other respiratory problems.
  • Don’t forget your sunscreen.

Obviously my run started a little earlier in the day, but it was still pretty warm (it just looks hot, doesn’t it?).June8I got a late start, after spending way too much time looking for my favorite running top (the one I wore in the marathon). I still haven’t found it, even though I know I just wore it the other day. It was about 6:45 when I finally headed out for my run, and already over 80 degrees. It was 90 when I finished!

The weekend forecast made it easy to skip some Saturday chores and head to Huntington Beach for another out and back trip. This weekend, one of our grandsons was competing in a baseball all star tournament. I’m not sure what was the best part, seeing him play, or the lovely 80 degree weather. Kidding! It was definitely the weather seeing the game.

We brought Coco along with us, and she was a dream. She’s been having a bit of a hard time with our new addition and his puppy exuberance, so we decided to give her a break. She loved it.

The only downside of these visits is the traffic. It’s about a two and a half hour drive, but the traffic is so heavy once we get close to Orange County that it almost makes you want to turn back around. And that’s on a Saturday! It really must be miserable on a weekday.

Speaking of Johnny, he continues to settle in. He can be a little terror when he gets excited, jumping and climbing over the dogs like they’re not even there. I came home after my run on Sunday to find the trash spread all over the kitchen and front room. While I’m pretty sure that it was Penny (also known as the trash dog) who tipped it over, Johnny was having a good old time spreading it around.

Other Running Stuff

So I feel like my recovery is finally over. While I didn’t get my mileage up to where I want it (a late start plays havoc on running goals), I did manage five miles on Saturday and six miles on the trails on Sunday. Even though it was hot, it felt really good to be back on the trails. I haven’t done much trail running since marathon training got serious. I was by myself, because Alan was riding his bike and Penny just isn’t up to the mileage anymore (I did take her for a one mile run/walk though).

June7On Wednesday I did a tempo run, my first speed workout since before the marathon (not that I did that much even then!). I did the Pyramid Fartek Workout that I posted last week, and it was tough! To be honest, I cut out one of the five minute intervals (the workout tops out with two five minute intervals with a 2:30 recovery. I did one of them). I was still pleased with my own effort. I also loved my new speed training shoes, the Asics Gel Electro33, which I reviewed here.
