Away for the Weekend: The Vegan Food

You’d think after following a plant based diet for several years I wouldn’t panic when traveling to a town I’ve never been before. A small(ish) town, famous only, as far as I know, for being the home of Raging Waters, one of the oldest and largest water parks in Southern California. A town that Happy Cow, that favorite website of vegans everywhere, draws a blank on (a little artistic license here, there are a few choices in the surrounding area). After all, it’s not that hard to find vegan food.

Yet I still do. Not panic exactly, but worry, studying my options before we go, checking addresses and maps. Eating vegan in a non-vegan restaurant means I have to ask a million questions, quiz the servers, who in turn quiz the chefs. All this for one little overnighter in San Dimas. So you can imagine how happy I was to find a restaurant with a vegetarian menu, that was not only within walking distance of our hotel, it also served Mexican food, a win/win as far as I was concerned.

Casa del Rey assures customers on their menu that no lard is used in their food prep. They also assured me in person that their rice was made with water not chicken broth. So I was able to easily take the vegetarian menu and, simply by removing the cheese, make it vegan. I had the vegetarian tacos, which were pretty good. We took our food back to the room (after our Dog Rescuer experience). I also ordered a burrito, but it was so huge I saved it for the next day. It was good too, but I forgot to take a picture.

Vegan Food

On Saturday, we left San Dimas to visit our family in Orange County. Vegan eating in Huntington Beach is much easier. We picked a standby, The Bohdi Tree, which is completely vegan, even though you can’t tell by the menu.  All items on the menu are called after their real meat names, like chicken, pork, fish, or even lobster. Kind of a weird feeling but the food is good.

Of course, that made it easier to convince our grandsons, who came with us to dinner, that they were eating “real” food. Before you call us out for lying to them, it worked, so there. They had the Sloppy Joe Sliders.

Alan and I started with the Thai Coconut Soup, and I had a coconut water to drink. That is, coconut water out of a real coconut (it tastes so much better that way!).

I had the Jackfruit Salad (my new obsession..I need to find it and try cooking with it myself!), and Alan had the Lemon Chicken with Rice.

They were both good. The salad was served on some crispy air puffed things (I have no idea what they were) that tasted too much like pork rinds for me to enjoy.

The next day, after my 10 mile run, I thought I’d earned a treat. There are several Native Foods in Orange County, so we decided that was where we’d have lunch. I also wanted to go to Whole Foods (our desert location won’t be finished for a year or so), because it would be my opportunity to pick up some Beyond Meat.

If you’re not vegan you may not know this, but Beyond Meat has been praised as the first meat substitute that has actually fooled meat eaters into thinking they were eating the real thing. I had heard about Beyond Meat, but didn’t realize that it was on the market until I read a review over at Vegan Miam. That sent me on a hunt for the product, which is basically only available at Whole Foods and a few other places, none of which are anywhere near my home.

Thus the desire to stop at Whole Foods on the way home. I felt very fortunate to find out that Native Foods in Tustin is right across the street from Whole Foods! So that’s where we went to lunch.

The Chicken Run Ranch Burger was on special, so that is what I ordered. Alan had his favorite, the Scorpion Burger. What can I say? Lunch at our favorite restaurant. Everything was delicious.

We sat out on the patio, which is much appreciated coming from the desert where we won’t be sitting outside for a few months. It was a bit of a dangerous experience, though. About 100 feet away a swarm of bees were, well, swarming above a restaurant across the way. Neither of us have allergies, so we didn’t panic, but there were a few people hiding inside the restaurant.

If you click on the picture you get a little better view of the swarm.

After lunch we made our stop at Whole Foods, where I picked up two packages of Beyond Meat. How did it taste? Well, you’re going to have to wait until tomorrow for that review along with a recipe for Peachy Quinoa Salad with Beyond Meat.

Did you have any interesting “food” experiences last weekend? A new restaurant, an old favorite, a new recipe? I’d love to hear about it.

Weekly Training Recap: The Costume Party Run, Week 2

It’s heating up in the desert, with the highs reaching over 100 degrees most days now. That means no messing around getting out the door in the morning, unless you want to endure a suffer-fest of a run. I cut it pretty close on Sunday for my long run, but I was fortunate to have a bit of a breeze to cool me off. I’m in week two of my training for the Costume Party Run. Here’s my weekly training recap.

Strength Training

Not much to report. I still haven’t made it back to the gym (next week!). I taught two classes. On Tuesday, my Superball class, I taught the single set circuit. Kind of fun and challenging, we don’t repeat any exercise, but complete at least three exercises for each muscle group. My class loves it because it seems to go quickly, plus they only have to do pushups once!

I taught my Fast and Furious class on Friday, but because I had a bit of a headache (and I get to design the class), I kept if kind of low-key and low-impact.

Running

I had work and travel challenges this week, but still managed to get my most important workouts done. On Wednesday, my speed work day, I had to work at 8:00 instead of my normal 10:00, so I cut the workout short. I ran two miles with Penny to warm up, then dropped her off and completed two-one mile repeats on the road. They both were 8:30 and they both felt much harder than they should for that pace. I really had time for a third interval, but I just didn’t have the heart.

On Saturday, which is supposed to be my long run day, Alan wanted to go to the CIF track finals, which were held at Mt. San Antonio College. Palm Desert had one athlete, a female high jumper, who made it to the finals, and he wanted to be there (he’s the head coach). I was happy to go, because I really wanted to see La Quinta High School’s amazing runner, a junior, who qualified in three events. She chose to just compete in the 1600 and the 3200, and I was hoping to have a chance to see her run at least one of those events.

There were six of us driving from Palm Desert High School, so we took one of the school vans. There is just something so energizing about attending a big event like this, with the best track atletes from Southern California competing for a chance to move on to the Masters, the next step before the State Championships. I hadn’t been there since my son ran track a long time ago (he graduated in 2000).

Susannah, our high jumper, did very well, finishing fourth in division three (our division includes the state champ, who jumped 5’11″). Susannah completed the 5’5″ jump on her second try. We’re not sure if that was good enough to continue on to the Masters, but she really did great. Out of all the competitors, two jumped 5’11″, one jumped 5’9″, three managed 5’7″, and there were about seven who completed the 5’5″ jump, so she does have a chance to move on. (note: just found out right before publishing..she made it! She’ll be competing in Cerritos next weekend.)

I did get a chance to see the runner from La Quinta, who’s 1600 was going off just as we were packing up to leave. Megan led from the very beginning, and managed to hold on all the way, in spite of a late charge from one of her competitors. She finished in 4:54, pretty amazing to see.

After surviving the whole day on almonds and Clif Bars, we got to stop at Native Foods for “lunch” (it was after 4:00 when we got back into town). I decided to try the Jackelope BBQ Sandwich again, and it was even better this time. Still spicy, but not quite as much as last time. Alan had the Scorpion Burger, which is always tasty, and we shared a Peanut Butter Parfait for dessert. We dined with another coach and athlete, but I used my better judgement and didn’t take pictures of their food.

So, back to my running. My long run was pushed back to Sunday, and I got out the door about 6:15, a little later than planned. I planned to run three miles with Penny, but she was so slow, I had to walk a good portion, and dropped her off after running about 2.3 miles. I headed back out, staying on the road and hard packed trail. The weather stayed cool, and I was running pretty well until I was about two miles from home. All of a sudden my stomach was so upset that I wasn’t sure if I’d make it to the bathroom at the park a mile away. I had to walk a good portion of the next mile. Not a normal experience for me, thank goodness.

After my stop at the park, I was able to finish my run, completing my 11 mile long run. I keep feeling like it should be easier than it has been the last two weeks. After all, I’m in pretty good shape, having just finished my half marathon three weeks ago. I’m sure the warming weather has something to do with it, but I feel a little frustrated and worried that my long runs haven’t been better.

Well, that was my training week. How did your training go? Any competitions, events, races, or breakthroughs you’d like to share? Give!

The Weekend: Running, Eating (#Vegan), Family and Easter. In San Diego.

My weekly training recap post will be up tomorrow. Week 10! I had way too much going on this weekend to write. I did have a great long run, which I’ll tell you all about tomorrow. In the meantime, here is what kept me from writing, in (mostly) pictures.

IMG_4834It was a beautiful (but a little chilly) day in Encinitas when we arrived around noon. Our room wasn’t ready yet, so we headed to Moonlight Beach. We sat, looked at the ocean, admired the new construction (they’re building a new snack bar/restroom complex), then we headed to lunch at the Roxy. I had a great falafel pita, and while we were there realized that it was almost a year to the day that my son, Nathan, and daughter-in-law, Sarah, made their big announcement while we had dinner at the Roxy. After lunch we did a little shopping (any one else think about MizFit when looking at those dolls?), then checked in. We made it back to the beach for a lovely sunset.

IMG_4833

For dinner, we headed to Native Foods. As you know, it’s my favorite restaurant and I’m so happy that the Encinitas location opened a few months ago. It was a beautiful evening, so Alan and I sat on the patio (next to a heater..it was a little chilly), and enjoyed our food. Bistro Steak Sandwich for me, Oklahoma Bacon Cheeseburger for Alan. We both had apple pie for dessert. Remember, in spite of the names, everything is free of animal products at Native Foods.

IMG_4838

On Sunday morning, I had a 12 miler on the schedule. I decided to cut it back to 10 miles, because of our Easter plans, but I felt so good I ended up running 11 miles. Another beautiful day. I felt so great on the run that I wished that it was race day! I was really pleased that I ran mile 10, which is a pretty good uphill stretch from Cardiff to Encinitas, at race pace. Hurray for me!

IMG_4835

After the run, we got a little dressed up and headed south to San Diego. We had big plans, but we stopped beforehand for a few photos. We were on Shelter Island, which is just across the harbor from downtown. Oh, the top photo is actually a statue of a surfer that is in Cardiff. It gets a lot of kidding for the pose and people tend to dress it up for the holidays.

IMG_4836

Here’s the main reason we were in San Diego! To see my grandson, Samuel.

IMG_4837And his parents of course. And Sarah’s family. We were invited to Easter Brunch at the Bali Hai on Shelter Island. That is Samuel’s other grandma in the photo above. And Alan finally had a chance to feed Samuel. He’s four months old now, very happy, active, and has been sleeping through the night for about two months! He was a little off his schedule today, but, as you can see, he finally crashed out in his daddy’s arms.

IMG_4839More family shots from brunch today. Check out the view from our table at the Bali Hai. Beautiful, isn’t it?

How was your holiday weekend? Did you get to spend some time with family and friends?
