New Goal! The SLO Marathon. Plus 3 Marathon Workouts

Well, I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I needed a goal, something to bring me out of my running doldrums and get me really training again. I told you then that the Palm Springs Marathon would be my target race. It’s in February, which gives me a few months to train.  That’s all well and good, but now I have another goal. A BHAG that I am excited about and ready to get started on. My big hairy audacious goal is….the SLO Marathon!

I am proud that I was selected as an Ambassador for the San Luis Obispo Marathon for a second time. If you’ll recall, I had planned to run the half marathon last year, but I was unable to complete my commitment. Fortunately, I have been given another opportunity, and this time I plan to run the full 26.2, which will be my 37th marathon!

A little about the San Luis Obispo Marathon. The tagline, Small Town, BIG RACE, really illustrates what you will find when you run this race. Located along the central coast of California, San Luis Obispo is a small college town, with a classic 19th century downtown area, a California mission, historic neighborhoods, and the wine country of the Edna Valley. The SLO Marathon will take you on a tour of all these sites, winding it’s way through San Luis Obispo and surrounding areas before the downhill finish at the iconic Madonna Inn. You will also enjoy a well-supported racing experience with lots of cheering fans as you run by.

Feel free to bring the family! In addition to the marathon and half marathon, there is also a 5k and two children’s races. The central coast of California is a great place for a family vacation, with lovely spring weather, great shopping, hiking trails, and opportunities for surfing, golfing, and kayaking.

According to the SLO Marathon website, we have 144 days left to train.  I plan to use that time to:

  1.  Build my base. Although I ran a marathon last June, I didn’t have a strong base of mileage to support a successful race. Yes, I finished. Yes, I had fun. But, this time, if I’m going to put in the effort I’d like to train correctly, get a good mileage base, and maybe (hopefully) run faster.
  2. Do the appropriate speed work (see below for my favorite marathon workouts). I need to get in my speed workouts, particularly half marthon and marathon pace workouts, if I want to run this race faster.
  3. Run a couple “tune-up” races. I will do the PS Half, plus possibly another half marathon, during my training. Depending on the timing, I may do one of the halfs (halves?) as a marathon pace run.
  4. Share! You know me, we’re in this together. I’ll share my training plan, workout successes (and failures), and details about the race itself.

I’m still working on my base training, which is pretty easy because it requires that I just add a little mileage each week. I’m working on my marathon plan, which I will share soon, then I’ll update regularly on my progress.

Once I build my base, I’ll be introducing some speed training. There are a lot of different workouts that you can do to improve your speed for the marathon. Here are three of my favorites.

    YAY! Congrats! How exicitng! That will be a great one of you to do! I love San Louis Obispo! Sounds like you have your plan under control, and I definitely hear what you are saying about not having a plan making you feel very unmotivated about your running, I am kinda at that point now, especially as London is in April, so I am not training for it yet. Glad you have figured yours out 🙂
