How Social Media Helps Me Run Faster

For those of you have followed along with my training adventures over the last few years, you may have noticed that I don’t hold back when I talk about my goals and expectations. Last year, when I wanted to break two hours in the half marathon for the first time since I turned 50, I shared my feelings about it, both here and on Twitter and Facebook. In many ways, all of that sharing helped to keep me accountable, helped to get me out the door when it was hot or I was tired. I knew that I would have to own up to my laziness, which gave me a push when I needed it. Which led to me achieving my goal.

So I was pleased but not surprised when I was browsing around on P&GeverydayTM and I found an article on the topic. While I was in the Health and Well Being section, I clicked to check out Convenient Workouts. There you will find many no-equipment workouts, tips for getting in your exercise, and this one: Can Social Media Make You Fitter?  I clicked, crossing my fingers. Turns out, it can! Of course you still have to do the work.

From Pinterest to Twitter to Instagram, there are so many helpful tips available!

One of the tips to make social media work for you is to make your goals public. So I guess I’ve been on the right track. I’m also happy to be part of the solution, since one of the other suggestions in the article is to make use of the free information available, of which I give plenty.

I have also used many of the other ideas. My twitter feed is full of some of the most inspirational athletes out there. When I see Meb post something like this, it helps get me motivated:

If I’m ever at a loss for a speed workout or challenging HIIT routine, I have no further to go than my ‘Favorite Workouts” Pinterest board, where I collect dozens of interesting and challenging training ideas. From the blogs I follow to the Instagram posts I love, I find so much motivation and information.

P&GeverydayTM has something for everybody. I was browsing in the Health and Well Being section, then chose Healthy Eating. From the numerous articles in that category, I selected 5 Superfoods Perfect for Summer, and found great information about the best fruits and vegetables that are available during the summer, plus the reasons they are considered a Superfood. I was so happy to see stone fruits on the list because I could almost live on fresh peaches, apricots, and nectarines during the summer!

Next, I checked out the Healthy Living section. It’s a good thing I did because I found an article that was written just for me, 4 Tips for a Better Bedtime Routine. Getting enough sleep is so important, and it seems to be one thing that I can never manage to do. I’m hoping that following a few of these tips will help. Of course, going to bed earlier would probably be helpful too.

These are just a few samples of what you will find on P&GeverydayTM. Other topics include Family, Home and Garden, Food, and Beauty, plus you will find great offers from brands that you already love and trust.

What fun! Definitely believe in social media for putting your goals out there, crowd sourcing your information and inspiration, and conversation on common interests. I haven’t checked P&G out yet but I’ve seen it being talked about! Guess now is a good time to click through! :-D
