Feel Confident with Poise (and win a $100 Visa Gift Card!)

As a personal trainer and coach, it is something that I hear frequently. A client will pull me aside, and tell me, usually in a whisper, that she “has a little problem.” Even though I can guess, I always stop to listen. She may have a hard time telling me, but finally, she’ll say that she has “little accidents” when she exercises. She will feel embarrassed by this, and maybe even think that there is something wrong.

What my client has is Light Bladder Leakage or LBL, and she, along with about a third of all women, may leak a little urine when she laughs or coughs suddenly. Physical activity such as running can also cause LBL. It is embarrassing and inconvenient, and may cause some women to limit their exercise or even their social activity.

Although LBL is associated with getting older, that is not always the case. Many women are affected with light bladder leakage in their 20s and 30s. While age can be a factor in LBL, so can childbirth, pregnancy, weight gain, bladder irritation or infection, and even stress.

Poise, with their line of light bladder leakage products, is bringing the conversation out in the open by encouraging women to share their LBL stories and offering support to women who suffer from LBL.

I am happy when my clients open this discussion with me. It gives me an opportunity, first to let them know they are not alone, and then to guide them in the right direction to find solutions so that LBL won’t inhibit their lifestyle. What should you do if you notice that you have leakage when you laugh, sneeze, or exercise? Here is the advice that I give my clients.

  1. Don’t be embarrassed. There is nothing wrong with you, you are not abnormal, you are part of a large group of women who share the same issue.
  2. Make an appointment with your doctor. While LBL is not a disease or a condition, it can be a symptom of something more serious.
  3. Do your Kegels. At some point in their lives, most women learn about Kegel exercises, but few practice them on a regular basis. Well, we should. Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can help relieve LBL. The Kegel exercise is very simple and can be done anywhere at any time. Simply contract the muscles that stop your urine flow and hold for several seconds. Release. Repeat 10 times. Aim to complete three sets a day.
  4. Use an effective panty liner or pad. Poise makes a complete line of panty liners and pads designed specifically for light bladder leakage. They absorb effectively and neutralize odors better than period pads, which usually aim simply to cover up odors with scent. Poise liners and pads don’t have to be thicker because they are made for LBL and instantly absorb wetness and neutralize odors so they are less likely to leak. I had an opportunity to try out the Poise liners. I wore them during normal activities, and tried them out on the run too. I was concerned that they wouldn’t fit properly or feel comfortable in my running shorts. I discovered that I wasn’t even aware of the liners while I was running. They stayed in place, and didn’t come loose or bunch up during my six mile run.

I wash up a LOT! :) I also use men’s deodorant now & works better than clinical strength which I loved before!

On this post – THANK YOU Debbie! Age does this too – man, the whole age gracefully – there is so much people do not know till you get there & for me, one who does all the things I am supposed to do & have for years – UGH, it sucks that it still happened to me! ;)

I’m 33 and have to deal with it. Especially if I decide to have coffee before I run in the mornings! I know, I should just drink water before, but I need that caffeine boost! I usually wear a bladder leakage pad when I run, and sometimes take 2 showers a day, depending on my training schedule.

Great post! At my gym there is always a quick rush for the restroom before workout involving double-under jump ropes. I keep liners handy for sure. Also if it’s just a matter of sweat and feeling fresh, those Shower Pill wipes are amazing.

I bathe often to stay fresh and clean and I also have a habit of changing my clothes twice a day (but that is more about my toddler making a mess all over my clothes)

Such an important post. I just finished the last unit in my MenoFitness course and this was a big topic. A couple of other things you can tell your clients to do; keep their feet closer together when they squat; limit the range of motion of their squats and lunges; perform upper body exercises seated on a stability ball.

I always remind my group fit ladies to head to the bathroom before class when I know they’ll be some jumping involved!

I luv baby powder! I like to use it all over, esp in summer! I like to try different fragrances, but I luv them all! jacinth_amethyst at yahoo.com

I have had that problem in the past and used poise liners to provide protection. I also learned quickly that caffiene and alcohol made it worse. Now I limit both if I am going to be exercising soon. I have lost weight and began exercising regularly and haven’t had any problems for several months.

I definitely take a lot of shower (especially here during the Texas summers). I also wear panty liners inbetween, um, periods, and and sometimes I will use feminine wipes.

To feel fresh, I shower often! If I start to feel too gross, it’s shower time :) I also use baby powder to try and stave off sweat and to feel dry and comfortable during the day :)

I shower in the mornings to clean and wake up and at night, once the kids are in bed, I take a great smelling bubble bath when I can!

I wear a pad during the day and change if there has been leakage. I also shower every day and use Gold Bond Powder Spray because it makes me feel fresh

It is nice to hear this subject being openly discussed, for so long it was a topic no one talked about. Thanks for the review, after reading it I would certainly try the Poise products.

  15. Nadine L says

Besides the obvious, daily showers, I have started using Feminine washes as well, with LBL a problem these days (dang sneezes, laughing and coughing) I need to change a couple of times a day and always use a feminine wash or wipe so I don’t smell like a truck stop rest room
