I’ve been really fortunate to find some fun and delicious new (to me) food items that I want to share with you. Some (like the Bestowed Box and the Zola Coconut Water and Acai Juice) were sent to me to try. The others were just delicious accidents that I came upon, sometimes while looking for something else.
My favorite item in my recent Bestowed Box was the Hemp Hearts. They are loaded with protein and omegas and they tasted great sprinkled on oatmeal or a salad.

Zola Coconut Water and Acai Juice
I love coconut water…when it comes out of a coconut. Other than that, I never found a brand that I cared for. I’ve tried several brands and they never seemed to taste like fresh coconut water, and some of them were downright sour.
I recently was sent a few samples of Zola to try. Two cans of coconut water, one with pulp, one without, and a bottle of Açaí juice. I tried the Açaí juice first. It has a nice crisp berry flavor, that is sweet but not overly so. Each little bottle is loaded with omegas, antioxidents, and is organic, gluten-free, vegan, kosher, and GMO free.
The coconut water…let’s just say I finally found a brand that I liked. The pulp-free one tasted like I was drinking it straight from the source. I also liked the coconut water with pulp, though I preferred it without. Both versions were tasty and refreshing. The great thing about coconut water for athletes is that it provides essential electrolytes, so important for hydration and recovery.
Dave’s Killer Bread
I found Dave’s Killer Bread by accident when I was at Vons the other day. I love bread, especially rye, but I truly hate paying $5 or more a loaf. I usually pick up a loaf of sprouted rye at Trader Joes, but that day I was at Vons and I needed bread. When I saw Dave’s, I was first happy to see that they had rye bread, then happy to see it cost more than $1 less that the other brand. I was even happier when I read the label. Usually when I am checking out a new bread, I have to squint at the ingredient list to see if it is vegan. Dave’s Killer Bread tells you right on the label, “no animal products.” Score! The bread is also GMO free, and just like their tagline, “just say no to bread on drugs,” there are no chemical ingredients. Just the (organic) ingredients that are supposed to be in bread.
Oh, and it tastes really good too. Check out Dave’s story here. It is truly inspirational, and a reminder that there is always hope.
Van’s Natural Waffles
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. “Frozen waffles. Are you kidding, Debbie?” Well, no, I’m not. Because before Van’s I never ate waffles. I mean, yeah when I was a kid and my grandpa had a waffle iron. But not since I have been vegan. I don’t own a waffle iron (if I did it would get used like once a year, so I really don’t need more clutter from unused appliances).
These were an accidental find. I did not go searching for vegan waffles. I was at the tiny “health” section at Albertson’s looking for something to take back to work for lunch. When I saw that the Van’s were egg and dairy free, I took a better look at the ingredient list. Not too bad. I could pronounce all the ingredients, of which there weren’t too many.
I should say that these are an occasional treat for me. Every now and then I feel like something sweet. Sue me.
Sweet Earth Seitan
Check out the ingredients in this Sweet Earth Seitan. Water, wheat gluten, soy sauce, seasonings. This is what would be in my seitan (if I took the time to make it). That is why I am loving Sweet Earth right now. They just started carrying it at Clark’s, and to be honest it was on sale for $2 less than the other brands, so I decided to try it. Sweet Earth seitan comes in traditional, chipotle style, or curry, either strips, slices, ground or satay. I’ve used this seitan in several dishes now (recipe coming soon for Chipotle Seitan with sweet potatoes and black bean and corn salsa), and it is a winner.
Do you have any delicious finds that you’d like to share?
Disclosure: With the exception of the Bestowed Box and the Zola products, which were, as mentioned above, sent to me for review, I purchased all the other items on my own. I was not compensated in any other way. All opinions are my own.
