Race Bling: 18 Years of Memories

A week or so ago, Heather over at Running with Sass, wrote a post about Race Bling, all those goodies we earn by our participation in, finishing, and sometimes winning, running events. She posted pictures of some of her favorites, then sent out a call to arms to her readers: Send her photos of our favorite stuff for a follow post. The deadline was July 7. I’m not good with deadlines.

Even though I am slow, it was a great idea, so I decided to steal borrow it for my own post. Unlike Heather, who has a beautiful display of all her medals, mine have been slung over the back of a chair for the last millennium few years. Finisher’s certificates? Yes, some are framed, but with the exception of a few that my husband has hung, they sit gathering dust in a bookcase.

Speaking of my husband, Alan has framed most of his old bib numbers, finisher’s certificates, and a lot of race photos, which are hung on the walls in our spare bedroom. My old bibs? Shoved in a drawer.

I know, I know, I should display this stuff proudly. After all, I am proud of my accomplishments. I’ve completed 35 marathons, more half marathons, and dozens of 5k, 10k, and 15k races. There are even some 6k’s in there (straight up a mountain at the Palm Springs Tram Road Race-also the race at which I got married).

So, for this occasion, I pulled out my race bling, sorted through it, and spread it out on my bed to record for your viewing pleasure.

Two last images (out of so many, I could seriously been doing this for days).

The good old days of running. Alan and I ran our second Paris Marathon in 2001. We carried disposable cameras and took many pictures along the way, including my favorite of all time (below), yet still managed to finish in 3:47:25.

My all-time favorite picture. Mile 20, the spectator we asked to take our picture thought we were nuts to stop for a photo op.

Any race bling that you’d like to share?

  7. This was so much fun! You have so much to be proud of and so many great memories. My bibs are shoved in a Manila envelope so don’t feel bad. : )

    • I actually did a video of the drawer that my bib numbers are jammed in, but decided not to use it. My girlfriend (the one from the video who ran LA in the rain with me) is a scrapbooker and has this perfect collection of books with bib numbers, finisher’s certificates, photos, etc. #blingfail
